10 reasons to watch The Revenant this weekend

The Revenant is probably one of the biggest films to be released this year – and here’s why you should go out and watch it right now.

1. Leonardo DiCaprio.

Known as the man who’s never won an Oscar, it looks hopeful that this will finally be his time. He’s already won a Golden Globe award for his performance as Hugh Glass in the film.

2. Tom Hardy.

British starlet Tom Hardy played both (yes, both) Kray twins in Legend last year. His supporting role in The Revenant is also nominated for an Academy award after a wonderful performance as the bad guy.

3. It’s a true story.

Yes, the whole thing really did happen in the 1820s – and somehow gives you more hope for humanity.

4. It was filmed in natural light.

It doesn’t take a genius to guess that much of a movie is fake – but the light in The Revenant is almost entirely natural. Filming in the middle of winter, in the middle of nowhere, means next to no electricity; but the natural aura makes for a colder, more harrowing watch.

5. It was all pretty real.

Mild spoiler alert ahead: but Leo really did eat raw bison’s liver in one scene, despite being vegetarian – and even slept in animal carcasses to get into character. That’s true dedication to method acting.

6. There’s not much speech.

Many of Leo’s lines are in Native American languages, but there are still plenty of silent parts. This is where the work of Ryuichi Sakamoto comes in – his first film composition in almost a decade – which elevates the tension and leaves you gripping the edge of your seat.

7. The budget was blown to get it right.

With a reported original budget of $60 million, director Alejandro Iñárritu and his team spent more money and more time getting it just right and spent an extra six months and eventual $135 million on the film.

8. You might need it for inspo if you get attacked by a bear. Just in case.

It’s an incredibly intense survival film – and it really did happen, so it’s not like it’s too made up to crawl inside a carcass for warmth. You never know when you’ll be mauled by a bear in the Canadian wilderness…

9. It’s up for TWELVE Oscars – and won three Golden Globes

Just this week, the film won Best Actor, Best Director and Best Dramatic film at the Golden Globe awards; not only that, but it has the most nominations at the Oscars and is expected to clean up when the awards ceremony comes around on February 28th.

10. Just look at the trailer.

It’s pretty astounding.

The Revenant is out now.
