HomeNEWSGENERALA444 Bridge Work Go Ahead February 25, 2014 GENERAL, LOCAL By Daniel Burton Plans for an extension to a bridge over the A444 have been approved by Coventry City Council. The plans aim to improve access to the Jaguar Business Park in Whitley, however they have been met with opposition from the cycling community who believe that these plans will be dangerous for cyclists. The Council has received £6.5million to carry out the works, but campaigners are concerned that the safety of cyclists will be compromised. Cycling charity CTC have stated that the extension will jeopardize cyclists “whilst at the same time making driving only marginally quicker.” The A444 Stivichall/Cheylesmore bypass is one of the major routes into the city. Along with the extension to the bypass the plans include a slip road off the carriageway directly connecting the A444 to Whitley and an extension to a toucan crossing to accommodate pedestrians and cyclists.
