Blaze to Battle Leaders at Skydome

Genting Casino Coventry Blaze will face top-of-the league Cardiff Devils for their eighth competitive meeting of the year at the Skydome Arena on Saturday.

The Blaze head into the fixture on the back of two narrow defeats to the Sheffield Steelers, one in overtime and the other conceding the winner with 1:06 left in the third. However, they can be buoyed by their performances last weekend, especially on both the penalty kill and their own PowerPlay.

The visitors come to town top of the Elite League after gaining points in their last six straight games (4-0-2). Andrew Lord’s men have been outstanding this season posting 49 points (23-6-3) from 32 games and are searching for their 6th win again the Blaze in 8 meetings.

Coventry can be prepared for an explosive offence this weekend, having already seen their opponents slot 31 goals past them in their seven previous meetings this year.

The Devils will be led by their speedy centre Joey Martin. The Canadian has played every game so far this season and leads the team with 35 points in 32 games (11 goals, 24 assists). Last year’s EIHL player of the year is on target for yet another 70+ point season after topping the league last term with 87 points in 66 games. His ability to retrieve pucks in the neutral zone and hit the blue line with speed will cause trouble for the Blaze defencemen.

On the defensive side of the puck, goaltender Ben Browns is expected to start in net for the Devils. The 32-year-old Rotherham native holds the fourth best goals against average in the league (2.51). However, his save % is not overwhelming (.908) so the Blaze could find success firing the puck at the net from the blue line and throwing bodies in front of Browns in hope of disrupting the 6’2” player’s sight.

Coventry, who lost three import defencemen on the weekend, will look to top forward Barry Almedia for their production. The American has 25 points in just 21 games (7 Goals, 18 Assists) for the Blaze and will look to add to the three points he accumulated on the weekend.

Brian Stewart is expected to start in net for the Blaze.

Puck drops at 7pm at the Skydome Arena, Coventry.
