Coventry recently fell 6th in the top ten places people are most likely to have a one night stand, behind cities such as Swansea and Birmingham. 9% of those interviewed in the Coventry area claimed to have had a one night stand over the Christmas period, compared to 19% in Swansea, who topped the chart, and Birmingham, coming second with 11%.

Pharmacy2U Online Doctor service commissioned the poll, questioning 2,000 UK adults with concern towards sexual health. Most worryingly, 14% of people in Coventry heightened the risk of an STI by having sex without a condom with someone who was not a long-term partner.

Dr Nitin Shori, NHS GP and Medical Director of the Pharmacy2U Online Doctor service said: “The New Year is a notorious time for STI cases and we’re preparing for a busy month. The research suggests many from Coventry could be starting 2014 with an STI shock.’’

Although sexual health is often considered a ‘taboo’, refraining from seeking medical help or advice can be a huge mistake as many STI’s, such as chlamydia, can go unnoticed without check ups. Public Health England has revealed that there has been more than 200,000 recorded UK cases of chlamydia annually, demonstrating how quickly and effectively an untreated STI can spread.

Dr Shori advises that “sexual health can be embarrassing for people to speak about, but whatever the condition, early detection and treatment is always advisable.”
