Coventry University Jets 56 – 0 University of Worcester – Jets keep up their winning ways

The Jets special teams unit got the game going

The Coventry University Jets maintained their 100 per cent start to the new season with a win over the University of Worcester Royals this past weekend with a thumping 56-0 victory over their rivals.

After winning the Division 2 Northern Championship last year but failing to reach promotion to division 1 due to a head to head technicality against the Leicester Longhorns, this year’s Jets squad are looking set to leave no doubt as to who is the best University team in the country.

Right from the off  the Jets took control as a high tackle on the horse collar by the Worcester defence setted the Jets offence up with first and goal on the one-yard line, making it simple for running back Justin Alpha to run the ball in for a touchdown, which was immediatly followed up with a two yard run for the two point conversion by quarterback Marcus Ubanski, making the score Jets 8-0 Worcester.

It wasnt just the offence that was getting it done, as the Jets defence stepped up to force Worcester to punt from their own one yard line allowing great field position for the oncoming offence. Thanks to a fantastic punt return by wing back Bami Olupona the Jets started the drive from the five yard line and from there once again Justin Alpha forced his way in for his second score of the game.

After a vast amount of dominating run plays, wing back Jonny Clark went untouched and scored a twelve yard rushing touchdown. Taking the score to Jets 26-0 Royals.

A scorline that would satisfy most just hadn’t satisfied the Jet’s tastebuds enough, so the undefeated team kept pressing with a beautifully weighted thirty eight yard throw to wide reciever Mark Collins, which set up Bami Olupona for his second touchdown of the game. Making the score 36-0 going into the half.

The second half began with more of the same as Justin Alpha scored his third touchdown of the game, moving the jets into an insurmountable lead of 42-0.

In American football, putting up fifty points is called a ‘fifty burger’ and that’s exactly what the Jets were looking for next, to which it came in the form of a touchdown by returning wing back Connor Boran, followed by another two point conversion thrown by quarter back Darcio Chabert Dias to wider reciever Jones Moia, his first catch as a Jet.

One final touchdown from Bami Olupona made the final Score 56-0 to the Jets, keeping their perfect start to the season in tact.

After watching his explosive unit score a mammoth 56 points, offensive coordinator Steve Lebenbom said that “games like this show that we have made great steps towards our goal as the players, coaches and volunteers, who have all worked tiredlessly to improve at each practice, as the culture of the team is about Prepare, Compete, Succeed”.

Also giving his thoughts on his teams huge win was Head Coach Adam Biggs, “This win has helped us get ready for the conference, as our aim this season is to take one step further from Northern Div 2 Conference title last year to gaining promotion this season”.

With such a dominant win and only conceding six points in two games, it looks as if it is going to take something special to stop the Jets this season.

The Jets were jumping for joy after their big win.
