The Brazilian football team Chapecoensehas been left decimated after a plane crash in Colombia killed the majority of their team.

The crash happened just before the aircraft reached its destination of Medellin, Colombia, leaving only six survivors. Several journalists that were following the football team as well as team’s coaching staff were all killed in the crash.

The football world has been playing tribute, with teams all around Brazil offering players for free to help Chapecoense re-build their squad.

Chapecoenses’ Argentine striker Alejandro Martinuccio did not make the trip because of injury. “Pray for my companions please,” he tweeted.

Players all around the world, including Wayne Rooney and Neymar have also been showing their respects on social media. Neymar wrote on Instagram, “Today the World cries, but heaven rejoices in receiving champions.”

Despite the pilot’s attempts to contact help, it appears an onboard electrical fault led to the loss of contact between the plane and air traffic control. So far, investigators suspect that the plane crashed due to a lack of fuel. The plane had planned to stop enroute to refuel in Bolivia, but this could not be carried out as the airport was closed.
