Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them is the prequel to the famous Harry Potter films, directed by David Yates and written of course, by JK Rowling. This film brought fans into a new country, a new era and introduced new aspects of the wizarding world that they all love. This film had a lot to live up to and in all fairness, stood out on nearly every level. Right from the beginning, the character Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) had something special about him, something that was likeable and had that ‘Harry like spark’.

Newt Scamander arrives in New York City with a suitcase full of magical creatures, which he is not supposed to have in the city. He’s not off the boat long when he bumps into no-maj (Muggle for us Brits) Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler), who was carrying a suitcase very similar to his own. – You can figure out what went wrong here. At the same time, Porpentina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston), finds him after one of his creatures’ escapes in a bank. She finds him a threat to the magical society and attempts to report him to MACUSA.

Of course this Muggle (Sorry no-maj) opened the case, letting some very interesting and new, magical creatures lose onto the streets of New York. J.K Rowling introduced the audience into the wizarding world through the Harry Potter series and since then, didn’t think it could get anymore exciting. Her imagination and love for this world has out done itself. Giving the audience a new love, for a new part of this world. Throughout the film we are introduced to creatures such as; a Niffler – a cute creature that looks very similar to a mole and is obsessed with shiny objects. An Erument – A rhinoceros like creature that is friendlier than she looks, after all, she just wants love. (Don’t we all) As well as a Demiguise – A monkey like creature than has the ability to turn invisible at will, making it one of the hardest beasts to find. We also find out his fur can be used to make invisibility cloaks – apart from the one that’s part of the deathly hallow of course. Yet these are only a few of the fantastic beasts that are introduced within the film.

Redmayne is perfect for the role of Newt Scamander. His love for these creatures and his awkward presence around other wizards is why people can love him so much. Plus, his mating dance to grab the attention of the Erument is something that the audience will never forget.

He gives the character something no actor could do, he is a well –meaning character, and he shows compassion and love towards his creatures. But some fans have seen the connection between Newt Scamander and Porpentina Goldstein is somewhat similar to the awkward love blossom between the loved Ron and Hermione. Rowling found a way to use this relationship to keep a love aspect of the previous movies. Although no foundation of a loving relationship fully formed within this film between these characters, it took Ron and Hermione 8 films, so fans can keep their fingers crossed for the next film!

Despite the lighthearted nature of both the characters and the beasts, the film takes a dark turn and the magical world is at risk of exposure. It’s only near the end of the film when darkness arises and Newt has to stand up and defend the world he loves so much. The film is beyond the imagination and is worth the watch!
