Just days after clinching the Formula One World Drivers Championship, Nico Rosberg today announced that he would retire from the sport for good.

The announcement, which happened hours before the prize giving ceremony in Vienna came as a total shock to everyone, even Mercedes Team Boss Toto Wolff.

“This is a brave decision by Nico and a testament to the strength of his character,” said Wolff.

He also added “The clarity of his judgement meant I accepted his decision straight away when he told me.”

Rosberg shortly after spoke about how the time felt right and the sacrifices he had taken to get here.

“I have climbed my mountain, I am on the peak, so this feels right,” Rosberg said.

Rosberg continued to say, “Through the hard work, the pain, the sacrifices, this has been my target. And now I’ve made it.”

Drivers of past and present took to social media to congratulate Rosberg.

It’s safe to say the entire F1 world will miss such a humble man in Nico Rosberg!
