Have A Heart For Others

During the past few weeks Coventry University students noticed that there are some boxes of the British Heart Foundation (BHF) placed on the whole campus. But what exactly does it mean?

Around seven million people in the UK are living with cardiovascular disease and more than two million people suffer from coronary heart disease. The British Heart Foundation is one of the biggest charities and funder of cardiovascular research. Because of that, scientists can do research regarding heart conditions, their diagnosis and treatment. Babies born with heart problems, parents suffering from heart attacks – for over 50 years the British Heart Foundation tries their best to support research in prevention of heart disease.

Michael Lewis had a heart attack when he was 55 years old. “We really need people who support charities like the British Heart Foundation because only with their help we have a chance to find ways of living with heart problems and save lives”, says Michael. Michael ended up in the hospital. After a long time in rehab and lots of doctor appointments, he was finally able to go back home. But Michael noticed that everything changed. The man who loved cycling and spending time on the football pitch was suddenly not allowed to do some of his hobbies anymore. “You really start minding yourself and listening to your body signals. I try to eat as healthy as I can and when I notice I’m quite exhausted, especially in stressful situations, I take a rest. You just have to accept that some things changed and that you have to be able to cope with it.” Michael is now 65 years old and lives with a pacemaker. He never had a heart attack again but he still sees the doctor very often. He knows that he was quite lucky to survive his heart attack ten years ago as people sometimes die because of it. “That’s why I think it’s important to do everything to help people with a heart disease and a risk of a heart attack. We need to support research even if it’s just a small amount of clothes we give to the British Heart Foundation”, says Michael.

In all the charity shops of the British Heart Foundation which are placed in the whole country, the BHF sells second-hand clothes, furniture, accessories and other stuff to get some money for their projects. Especially Christmas is a very important time of the year for the BHF. People buy Christmas cards for charity, fund donate some money or leave a gift in their will. The boxes around the University Campus shall help people to be aware of the risk of a heart disease and induce them to donate something that they don’t need any more. People should donate their unwanted Christmas presents and throw them into one of the boxes instead of keeping them. Christmas seems to be a time of happiness and joy and a good reason for everyone to think about others as well.
