Theatre One during 1920’s, then known as The Alexandra TheatCoventry’s 100-year-old Theatre One cinema is to soon be demolished to make way for flats.

The cinema will be demolished after a campaign by arts group Through The Wall Project to save the Ford Street cinema failed. Despite vigorous efforts from the group, who planned to revive the Theatre One as a cinema and arts building, they were unable to raise the necessary funds to accommodate such a project in time.

The owners of the property, G&K Groundworks, say the site will be replaced with a £2.2million residential and retail development. G&K Groundworks had originally said they would listen to sensible offers but would otherwise continue with the plan to demolish the site.

The building was originally opened as The Alexandra Theatre in 1917, which closed in 1968 to then be reopened after refurbishment as Theatre One in 1970. In 1991 the property was sold and became the Mustard Nightclub, which later folded.
