Japanese Princess graduates

A Japanese Princess – often regarded as the country’s Kate Middleton – will graduate from the University of Leicester today.

Her Imperial Highness Princess Mako of Akishino has returned to De Montfort Hall in Leicester to collect her postgraduate degree in Museum Studies. The Princess kept her identity secret while completing her studies in Leicester, and also had a work placement at Herbert Museum and Art Gallery in Coventry in 2015. Her identity as the granddaughter of reigning Emperor Akihito was revealed at a press conference last year – announcing she had completed her studies and would graduate in January.

Head of the School of Museum Studies, Dr Suzanne Macleod, said: “We have a strong connection to the cultural profession in Japan with many students graduating from our school to take up posts in museums and galleries there and so it felt very natural that Mako should come and follow her interests with us.

“She has been a pleasure to teach, has worked incredibly hard and should be very proud of her achievements.”
