Peer Pressure in University?

University is a place to meet new friends and have new experiences. Among many of the new experiences that some students face with, is drugs and alcohol.

However, what happens when trying to fit in leads students into a situation they’re not comfortable with when they’re peer pressured into doing something they don’t want to do.

What is peer pressure? Peer pressure is defined as being pressured or influenced by peers into doing something they’re not comfortable with doing. So where should students go and what advice is there about peer pressure?

David Robertson has been a counselor for 16 years, 13 of those years have been at Coventry University. He says, “It’s quite common, unfortunately,…peer pressure to me is when people join a new group of people and want to be accepted and feel more accepted within that group.”

However, why do people say yes to situations they don’t want to be involved in? Robertson says that “People want to fit in and they want to belong…they engage in behaviors that they don’t enjoy or don’t want to do and they just struggle to say no cause they don’t have many friends, especially coming to University”.

For students who live in halls or a student house at University, it can be difficult to say no. Students may participate in something they want to do, for fear of being name called. Robertson says that it may cause “Problems with their accommodation…they eventually say no, they can then be labeled as boring…which can be isolating “

If you are being pressured, Roberston says ”to be more assertive…It’s about learning to say no, I’m don’t want to do that, I’m not interested in that, I don’t want to go there, I don’t want to take that “. He says “Assertiveness to me is key when you are trying to manage yourself in a peer pressure situation.”

If you are a student and want to talk to someone about peer pressure and get more advice on it. Go and book an appointment with your University counselor or speak to a family member or a friend.
