Powerful Earthquake Strikes New Zealand

A strong earthquake has struck the south island in New Zealand.

The earthquake which hit 7.8 on the Richter scale, came just after midnight (local time).

The earthquake was followed by a Tsunami along the northern-east coast.

Residents were told to go further inland or find higher ground.

The New Zealand Civil Defence Ministry (MCDEM) tweeted: “The first wave may not be the largest. Tsunami activity will continue for several hours,”

2011 saw Christchurch hit by a devastating earthquake that killed 185 people and destroyed the city centre.

The MCDEM are regularly tweeting about how to stay safe and what areas are expected suffer some activity.
