WATCH: Protests outside council building brings halt to city’s bin collections

Bin collections did not take place as usual on Tuesday as bin men were protesting outside the Coventry city council building all morning.

The men were protesting “in support of their union convenor who was suspended from work on Friday pending allegations of gross misconduct”, said Alan Lewis.

Mr Lewis, regional officer of Unite the Union, was at the main council building as a representative of the men on strike.

After issuing a notice calling for a strike last Friday, “the management took exception to the content of the document and as a result he was suspended on Friday,” said Mr Lewis.

Mr Lewis also stated that the Union and the city council were meeting to resolve the dispute.

“We are trying to find a way forward to resolve…all the issues we’ve got concerns about. I’ve just been speaking to the regional secretary, seeking clarification on a number of points and we’re continuing to try and have discussions with the city council in order to try and resolve the situation,” he said.
