What’s the big deal about iPhones anyway?

If you have an iPhone you will probably be thinking: “What is wrong with this person?” Nothing is wrong with me. I just don’t see the big deal about iPhones and here is why.

I have owned phones made by Sony Ericsson, Samsung, Nexus, Blackberry, Nokia, and now am the proud owner of an LG G4. As you can tell, the iPhone is not on the list and, personally, I don’t think I am missing out on much.

I am sure it will shock many iPhone users to learn that some Android smartphones perform better than iPhones and come with the added bonus of being a lot cheaper. A high-end Android phone – such as the Nexus 6P, which is considered one of the best smartphones of 2016 (TechAdvisor) – is priced at £439 in Carphone Warehouse. The iPhone 6S, on the other hand, would cost £539 in the same place. That’s a whole £100 more expensive than the Nexus 6P. A whole £100 that I could put to better use as a student (probably in Topshop, but whatever).

The gap between Android and iPhone is getting ever closer, especially since Samsung introduced the Galaxy series and now Edge. Google and LG have also developed lower-price, high-performance devices such as Nexus and LG G2 and G4 phones.

Yet people (especially the younger generation) have this fascination with owning an iPhone and I believe that it is largely to do with celebrity endorsement of the iPhone and Apple products in general – the same effect can also be seen with the Beats headphones by Dr Dre. Popular musicians use Beats in their music videos and most television shows and movies show actors using iPhones and/or iPads.

This kind of advertising has gone a long way to ensure the iPhone is still one of the most popular phones out there.

But let’s not forget about Android devices. With the likes of the Samsung Galaxy, Nexus 6, HTC M8 and M9, as well as LG’s G2 and G4, there are much more choices out there than just the iPhone, which, to its credit, is a great phone.

Just a friendly reminder – don’t get too caught up in the Apple wave and enjoy all that Android has to offer!
