Why Do We Celebrate Christmas?

With Christmas just a few weeks away, the festivities around the city are already starting and people couldn’t be more excited. Christmas is known for being a Christian holiday, but does that mean only people from a certain religion can appreciate this celebration?

It is  thought that Christmas and other holidays is a time to spend time with your family and a chance to relax from daily chores. While numerous families celebrate Christmas with a traditional dinner, many see it as a tradition that brings you back to the days when you were a child, where everything was so magical and new.

Airidas Blazukas had the chance to talk to Donald Parr, who is one of Coventry Cathedral’s chaplains. He asks him what does the holiday time mean to him. Can only one particular religion partake in these festivities? Find out below.

The events at Coventry Cathedral for the holidays start on Saturday 16th of December with concerts to aid NSPCC (UK children charity) and culminate on Christmas morning with Christmas eucharist. You can find the full list of events at the official cathedral website which you can find a link for at the end. I think that we should stop worrying what do the holidays mean to other people and just enjoy the time we can spend with our loved ones and be thankful for everything we have in our lives.

While the winter holidays are cheerful time in the UK as someone who is European I wanted to show another a way that people spend Christmas in Europe, I caught up with Lukas who is a working professional from Poland and asked him how the holidays are spend in his home and how it compares to the UK.

Q. Thanks for finding some time to talk to me, so the first question is how were your holidays?

A. My holidays were a bit exceptional as instead of spending them with my family I have celebrated with my friends.

Q. So you did not see your family during the holidays?

A. No, like I said I spent them with my friends with whom I am currently living.

Q. Any traditions in your family during the Christmas time?

A. At Christmas time my family tends to come together. We put twelve different dishes on the table for everyone to eat. Also, as most of other people we also decorate a Christmas tree at the house.

Q. Do you think it is important to spend time with your family during Christmas time?

A. I think it is really important to maintain a connection with the family and spending time together with them helps.

Q. Do you think Christmas is just a day you get gifts from your family or does it have a deeper meaning?

A. Personally for me this period of holidays does not mean much. On the other hand, I don’t have anything against it and as I like to celebrate, it gives me some extra time off to enjoy myself.
